Desk mat vs mouse pad: which one do you need?

Short answer: a mouse pad is only for the mouse. A desk mat, also called an extended or XL mouse pad, sits under the keyboard and the mouse together. If you use a keyboard and a mouse, a desk mat is the better buy.

When a mouse pad is enough

Cloth, PU leather or felt?
These are the three common desk mat materials in India.
- Cloth top on a rubber base: the mouse glides smoothly, the rubber grips the desk, and it can carry a printed design. This is what gaming mouse pads use.
- PU leather: easy to wipe and looks formal, but many buyers complain that it slides around on the desk.
- Felt: soft and warm, but it soaks up spills and stains easily.

Is a desk mat the same as an XXL mouse pad?
Yes. "Extended mouse pad", "XXL mouse pad" and "desk mat" usually mean the same thing: a large cloth mat for both keyboard and mouse.
Does a desk mat affect mouse tracking?
A smooth cloth top tracks well with optical and laser mice. Very glossy or transparent surfaces are what cause trouble, and a cloth mat fixes that on glass desks.
How do I clean it?
Wipe it with a damp microfibre cloth and let it dry flat. For deeper cleans, use mild soap and lukewarm water.
