How to pick a good desk mat under ₹500 in India

Short answer: under ₹500 you can get a good desk mat, but six things separate one that lasts from one that peels, slides or smells. Check these before you buy, from any brand.
1. The size in centimetres, not the name
"XL" and "XXL" mean different sizes at different brands, from 80 to 90 cm wide. Look for the size in cm or mm, and measure your desk first. Our size guide shows how in one minute.
2. A natural rubber base, not foam
Many cheap mats use a foam base and still call it "rubber". Foam crumbles at the edges and flattens in a few months. A natural rubber base is heavier, grips the desk and keeps its shape. If a listing doesn't say "natural rubber", ask.
3. Thickness of 3 mm or more
Thin 2 mm mats curl at the corners and feel hard under the wrist. 3 to 4 mm lies flat and feels soft.
4. Stitched edges
Unstitched edges fray and the top layer starts to peel away from the base. Look for stitched or sealed edges in the photos, not just in the title.
5. How the design is printed
On a good printed mat, the ink is dyed into the fabric (sublimation), so it doesn't crack or rub off. A design that sits on top of the surface wears off where your wrist rests.
6. Shipping and returns
A ₹299 mat with ₹99 shipping and no returns costs more than it looks. Check that the price includes delivery, and that you can return it if it doesn't fit your desk.
